What Is GREDO Doing to Improve Clean Water and
Hygiene Services in Somalia?
Water scarcity and inadequate sanitation are global crises that affect millions, with Somalia standing at the forefront of this challenge due to years of drought, conflict, and displacement. In many regions of the country, communities struggle daily to access clean water, proper sanitation, and basic hygiene facilities, leading to widespread health risks and waterborne diseases. These conditions not only threaten lives but also hinder the development and resilience of vulnerable populations.
GREDO is tackling this crisis head-on through its comprehensive WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) program. By drilling new boreholes, rehabilitating existing water sources, and extending pipelines, GREDO is bringing safe drinking water to some of the most remote and underserved areas in Somalia. To address the critical sanitation gaps, GREDO constructs gender-segregated and disability-friendly latrines, ensuring that all community members have access to dignified sanitation facilities. Hygiene promotion is another pillar of this effort, with large-scale awareness campaigns teaching communities the importance of proper
sanitation, handwashing, and water treatment. By distributing hygiene kits and facilitating community clean-up campaigns, GREDO empowers local populations to maintain healthier environments.
