The WFP Relief Program is a multiyear humanitarian assistance project aimed at addressing the critical food needs of communities in Somalia affected by crises, including conflict, natural disasters, and economic disruptions. In 2024, GREDO, in partnership with WFP Somalia, is implementing this project across three districts in the Bay region: Burhakaba, Bardale, and Dinsor. The primary objective is to prevent hunger and malnutrition by providing immediate food assistance to the most vulnerable communities, including marginalized groups and people living with disabilities.
The program offers life-saving interventions such as vouchers and cash transfers for food assistance, ensuring that crises-affected households and communities have access to basic necessities. It also provides specialized nutritional support to enhance long-term food security and reduce the risk of malnutrition.
The project specifically targets 5,260 households (31,560 individuals) across rural areas and IDP (Internally Displaced Persons) communities in the Bay region, focusing on those most severely impacted by drought and conflict. By leveraging partnerships with international donors such as Australian Aid, the Austrian Development Agency, and the European Union, the project seeks to build resilience within these communities and support their recovery.
Running from January 2024 to December 2024, the WFP Relief Program aims to prevent further displacement, alleviate suffering, and create sustainable solutions for food insecurity in the region.
