Amina Isack Ibrahim, a 25-year-old mother, has faced unimaginable challenges since the
devastating drought forced her family to flee their pastoral home in Habal-barbaare
village. When Amina and her family of six arrived at the Mitaano-Bur Internally Displaced
Persons (IDP) camp in Baidoa, they were met with even greater hardships, as the camp
struggled to meet the basic needs of its inhabitants.
It was during one of GREDO’s regular community outreach visits that the team
discovered Amina’s 17-month-old daughter, Rahma, in a dire state of malnutrition.
Rahma’s measurements, including a mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) of just 10cm,
a weight of 5.2kg, and a height of 65.5cm, indicated she was suffering from severe acute
malnutrition (SAM).
“When the GREDO team found Rahma, she was in a very fragile condition,” Amina recalls.
“I had tried traditional remedies, but her health only continued to deteriorate. I was losing
hope, but then the GREDO team stepped in and provided the vital support we needed.”
Promptly, Rahma was referred to the Banreer Health and Nutrition Center, where she
received comprehensive care. The dedicated staff at the center diagnosed Rahma’s
condition and immediately initiated treatment, providing her with antibiotics, vitamin A
supplements, deworming medication, and ready-to-use therapeutic food (RUTF) to
address her severe malnutrition.
“The care and attention Rahma received at the health center were truly
transformative,” Amina says with a grateful smile. “Thanks to the support
provided by GREDO and CONCERN Worldwide, my daughter’s health was
restored, and hope was reignited within our family.”
Amina’s story resonates with the profound challenges faced by countless families
displaced by the devastating effects of drought and conflict in Somalia. Yet, through the
tireless efforts of GREDO’s community nutrition volunteers and the dedicated team a the
Banreer Health and Nutrition Center, Rahma’s life was saved, and Amina’s faith in a
brighter future was rekindled.
“I will never forget the kindness and compassion shown by the GREDO team,” Amina
reflects. “In our darkest hour, they were there to offer a helping hand and restore my
child’s health. This experience has taught me that even in the toughest times, there are
people who care and are willing to make a difference.”
Rahma’s journey is a testament to the transformative impact of GREDO’s interventions in
the Mitaano-Bur IDP camp. By promptly identifying and providing comprehensive care to
severely malnourished children like Rahma, GREDO is not only saving lives but also instilling
hope in the hearts of resilient mothers like Amina, who are determined to rebuild their lives
and secure a brighter future for their families.
