Organizational Background
GREDO is an indigenous local NGO. Non-profit non-partial, non- political and voluntary organization based in Baidoa. To reach the most affected grass-root communities in Bay and Bakool regions and lower Shebelle effectively and efficiently, the necessity of local partnership in relief program appeared. Responding to the partnership need, a group of Somali intellectuals and well-wishers initiated in December 1992 a local non-governmental organization called Gargaar Relief and Development Organization (GREDO) the organization has implemented during these period different projects including relief and emergency programs and later improved into rehabilitation and developmental programs.
Specific duties and responsibilities
Job Purpose:
To manage SFP and OTP community outreach activities and guarantee the efficient and effective sensitisation, mobilisation and participation of the communities targeted, thereby maximising programme performance
Activities:
Key OTP/SFP community activities:
Community mobilisation & sensitisation
Active case finding (screening) within communities
Follow up of OTP/SFP cases and absentees/defaulters if required
Health and nutrition education
Plan, implement and monitor/evaluate OTP/SFP Community Outreach activities
Select, train and supervise a number of outreach volunteers at each OTP/SFP site; planning from the outset with the OTP/SFP supervisor incentives for volunteers (not monetary). Involve community leaders in the selection process and promote the identification of an outreach volunteers for each village/ group of villages
Report to the OTP/SFP Nurse and liaise closely with nutrition programme staff and other relevant partners (community leaders, other agency staff etc.) regarding community outreach activities.
Seek and provide feedback and suggest alteration to the programme as appropriate to maximise impact
Participate in OTP/SFP general programme management duties as requested by OTP/SFP Programmes (e.g. distribution planning, monitoring and reporting) and perform other tasks as negotiated (e.g. training of staff/volunteers)
Mobilisation and sensitisation
In liaison with the OTP/SFP nurse / nutrition assistants for the area devise performance indicators to monitor effectiveness and impact of community mobilisation; set objectives/indictors and record progress against these
Explore all links with individual members of the community (eg. village chiefs, traditional midwives, local health workers) and develop their engagement and ownership of the community based activities
Provide regular feedback to communities
In liaison with the OTP/SFP nurse/nutrition assistants for the area establish a procedure allowing beneficiaries to comment or complain about aspects of the programme and then address any relevant concerns
Record examples of best practice
Active case finding
In liaison with the OTP/SFP nurse/nutrition assistants for the area devise and implement a strategy for active case finding (screening) within identified the catchment areas using nutrition staff/outreach volunteers
In liaison with the OTP/SFP nurse / nutrition assistants for the area create systems/tools for screening follow-up and feedback statistics to programme supervisors and adapt case finding strategy appropriately
Follow up of cases
In liaison with the OTP/SFP nurse / nutrition assistants for the area coordinate the activities of outreach volunteers and ensure active participation of outreach volunteers in OTP? SFP distributions.
In liaison with the OTP/SFP nurse / nutrition assistants for the area ensure that a fully-operational system is in place for the follow-up of children not returning to the programme (including absentees, defaulters, deaths) and children “at risk” (long stay/not gaining weight / social or physically disabling problems) and that post-visit feedback is given to the SFP nurse / nutrition assistants for the area.
Monitor and ensure the programme’s engagement with disadvantaged or excluded groups
Seek and exploit opportunities for capacity-building of health employees at OTP/SFP sites.
Health and nutrition education
In liaison with the OTP/SFP nurse / nutrition for the area guarantee that, whenever possible, all team members deliver health and nutrition education of appropriate content and manner to mothers and other carers
In liaison with the SFP nurse / nutrition assistants for the area converse with mothers at sites and regularly conduct surveys evaluating the mothers’ understanding of the messages and the programme in general
Person specification
Essential
Experience of community health work / community mobilization
Experience of emergency nutrition work and implementation of feeding programmers, including monitoring and evaluation
Proven capacity of management, leadership and teamwork
Excellent communication skills and a willingness to be respectful, kind, sensitive and empathize with all beneficiaries and their careers.
Willingness and capacity to be flexible and accommodating when faced with difficult working conditions
Demonstrable ability at report writing
Ability to frequently travel and be part pf the community mobilization at the field.
Fluency in written and spoken English
Computer literate
Desirable
Health / Public Health / Nutrition / Diploma or equivalent
Experience in planning, implementing, monitoring and evaluating community health / community mobilization / Nutrition activities/programs.
Child Protection
The responsibilities of the post will require the post holder to have regular contact with children or young people
